Children are a blessing

Children bring such delight, a refreshing perspective that we often miss in our walk with God. Oliver Wendell Holmes said: "Pretty much all the honest truth-telling there is in the world is done by children." Having had four children, I can certainly say that sometimes they tell the truth at just the times and places we wish they would not! Bill Cosby used to have a show "Kids say the Darndest Things" and some of the things they said make more sense than we do!

Jesus had an appreciation of children and their point of view. He did not ignore them, but welcomed them into his presence. Viewing them as people of great value in God's sight, he reached out to children and ministered to them, even blessing them individually. Jesus often presented children as examples of the type of faith we should have. We are reminded by his example to love children unconditionally, and to cherish and nurture them.

We were privileged this week in our church service to have a special part of the service dedicated to two young children of the Tora family, one of them, Judah, little more than a month old. For the "Blessing of the Children" the congregation prayed collectively for both the children, their parents and the extended family.

We will be blessed by having these young ones walk with us, with their laughter, frankness and ability to see past unnecessary detail. May we have many occasions to remember: "While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about."
